The TWU is currently surveying its members in the midst of ongoing attacks on bus Perth's drivers. Over the past week both local newspapers have run front page stories on the epidemic of violence and vandalism on the metropolitan bus network.
On July 26 the Sunday Times reported, "ROCK-THROWING vandals with vendettas against drivers are ambushing buses in well-planned guerrilla-style attacks."
Two days later The West Australian newspaper carried the front page heading, "Buses hit by surge in antisocial behaviour."
Total incidents including rock attacks jumped from 5,000 per year to 6,500.
Thins have got seriously out of control.
The TWU has been very vocal in calling for greater security for drivers and tougher action to deal with offenders.
We want stiffer penalties - including long jail terms for those who attack drivers.
Attorney General Christian Porter has assured us those laws are in the making and not far away.
He says the government will also introduce a "Name and Shame" system that will identify and ban offenders.
Consideration is also being given to the installation of new security screens to stop spitting and people throwing things at, or over, drivers, on ALL Transperth buses.
One thing is for sure - much more needs to be done. But just how far do we go?
Drivers have made all sorts of suggestions, up to and including strike action.
However, to assist the TWU in deciding what measures to take, we decided to seek FEEDBACK from our members.
We asked our members to give us their views NO LATER THAN Wednesday 5th of August.
