Winning More Super is Vital For Members

Winning More Super is Vital For MembersThe TWU has already clocked up some good wins in its drive to have employers pay more into our members' superannuation accounts. As things stand many Transport Workers are retiring to a life of near poverty on the pension. That must change.

Some of the major firms who have agreed to increase their payments include:
• Linfox, who will increase their contributions from 9% to 12% over the next three years and is committed to further rises in the next pay round.
• Toll will lift their payments to 11.5% as part of our latest 2½ year deal.
• Armaguard employees will be on 12% super within two years.
• Container Cargo Specialists have agreed to pay 1% extra for the next three years taking their contributions to 12%.
• K&S Freighters will do the same.

By improving super benefits and paying union wage rates these companies are making themselves the most attractive firms in the transport industry. With truckies again getting hard to keep as the so-called Mining Boom Mark 11 gathers momentum, attracting drivers will again become vital to their operations.

And now that we have cracked the nut with most of the major firms we be attempting achieve higher super for our members at other companies.

Of course there are differing opinions in our membership about super. Generally speaking older people appreciate its importance more than the younger
ones. The closer you get to retirement the more you start thinking about where the money will come from to give you a reasonable standard of living.

And we are all going to get old sooner or later, so the time to start is NOW!

The extra superannuation contributions we have been achieving will add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the retirement nest eggs of those who are now in their 20's and 30's.

And workers in their 40's and 50's will be able to walk away with much more than the pittance they would have got. And that is why the TWU believes winning more super is important.
