The China FTA and Australian Jobs

« Back to News Articles

The Abbott Government has signed a new trade deal with China but the deal will allow Chinese firms to bring in foreign labour ahead of Australian workers.

Unemployment is already too high, over 800,000 Australians are unemployed. Youth unemployment is 13.5 % nationally.

In WA over 95,000 people are now out of work and the TWU now regularly receives calls from truck drivers desperate to find work.

Under the China FTA, Chinese companies will be able to bring in workers from overseas and NOT have to offer these jobs to local workers first.

Chinese companies will be able to bring in an entire overseas workforce for any project over $150 million dollars and they only need a 15% stake in the project to do it.

The Chinese FTA also means trades like carpenters; electricians etc. will not have to be qualified.

The China FTA means cheap imported products that do not meet Australian standards will flood the market putting safety and lives at risk and wipe out local jobs.

Many overseas workers are exploited, under the China FTA this will only get worse.

We have seen with 457’s visas that there is poor enforcement to ensure workers are paid Australian conditions and standards.

There are currently 1.8 million temporary work visa holders in Australia.

We need a government with an immigration program that doesn’t rely on exploited workers.

At present Abbott & Co are desperate to get the Free Trade Agreement up without changes their open-door policy for Chinese labour.

And they are telling a lot of lies in the process. Recently the ABC ran its ‘Fact Checker’ over the policy and reached the following verdict:

Facts Checked

The claim: Unions say the China Australia Free Trade Agreement “allows Chinese companies to bring in their own workforce for projects over $150 million and removes the requirement that jobs be offered to local workers first”

The verdict:The agreement allows the Immigration Department to decide that jobs should be offered to local workers before it issues visas to overseas workers, but it does not require this to happen. The ACTU’s claim checks out.
