Truckies understand there are risks involved in their profession, whether from other road users, inclement weather or simple lapses in concentration.
Mona Hemsley, Audiologist and State Manager for AudioClinic, says truck drivers often neglect one of their most valuable assets – their hearing.
Hearing loss is one of the elements which can have a significant impact on a truck driver's ability to do their job. They must be able to hear their truck radio, to listen to abnormal truck operating sound and outside noises like sirens and horns.
Mona adds, "Most hearing loss can be effectively treated, making a huge difference to someone's ability to stay in the workplace longer and in their quality of life".
"Truckies driving for long periods "of time or over long distances risk suffering noise-induced hearing loss," she says. "This means that the small hair cells in your inner ear become permanently damaged and you may end up needing a hearing device to help in your daily conversations or to stay driving on the roads."
It's important to recognise the warning signs of noise-induced hearing loss, which can include tinnitus (a ringing or humming sound in the ears), dizzy spells or a 'blocked' sensation in the ears.
"The first step to identify if you have a hearing problem is by reviewing the top 5 signs of hearing loss listed below".
Signs of hearing loss include:
- Asking people to repeat themselves all the time (like it's their fault you can't hear them).
- Getting tired and frustrated when talking to people.
- Answering questions incorrectly, or even answering the wrong question!
- Turning up the TV so loud that your partner or kids complain (and your neighbours!)
- Ignoring the grandkids because you can't understand what they're saying.
"If you nodded your head to at least one of the top 5 signs of hearing loss, I would suggest you book yourself or your partner into a hearing check-up", continues Mona.
Anyone exposed to loud noise through their workplace or recreational pursuits should have their hearing tested every two years.
"The good news is, you don't need to sacrifice your love of the road or your hearing," she says. "You and your family can enjoy the best of both by visiting AudioClinic for a free hearing check-up and if required our clinicians will work with you to provide a solution or protection that meets your specific need."
AudioClinic are offering Free* hearing check-ups for all TWU members and their partners. If you show your membership card you will receive 10% off any hearing device purchases, up until 30th June 2015.
