Don’t Trust Turnbull

« Back to News Articles

As this edition of the Wheel hits your letterbox australian’s are preparing to go to the polls on July 2 to elect a new federal government.

Hopefully, it is a NEW government because the Abbott and Turnbull governments have let us down badly.

The liberal’s appalling record speaks for itself:

  • 36,000 more unemployed.
  • 720,000 without a job.
  • Over 1,000,000 people underemployed.
  • Lowest wage growth in 20 years
  • Budget deficit doubled.
  • 122,000 apprentices cut
  • More than $1 billion cut from skills training programs.
  • More than 1,000,000 visa workers allowed in.

Add to these the liberals’ promises to their big business mates that they will drive down the cost of labour and make it easier to sack workers.

Turnbull himself has stated on the public record that penalty rates will have to go.

Think about that: PENALTY RATES WILL GO:

Now, i’ve been a transport worker and TWU official for just on 30 years and I know just how important penalty rates are to our members.

I know that, in many cases overtime payments add up to 30% extra to our member’s pay packets.

Get your pay packet out and do the calculations yourself. Often it is the overtime that makes the job worthwhile.

Not in all cases, i admit. but in thousands of cases it is the penalty rates that enable struggling families to pay their bills – including the mortgage.

And there are many people struggling out there. Many people losing jobs that are now a lot harder to get. Particularly among young people.

turnbull’s answer to our youth jobs problem is 120,000 ‘four week - $4 per hour’ internships, a dodgy program that is little more than a “Work for the dole scheme”.

What we need to help our youngsters is not Micky Mouse internships.

We need to return to the genuine Skills Training Programs and apprenticeships that Abbot and Turnbull ripped off us.

And the Party offering these essential changes is the labor party.

Labor are certainly more likely to give working people a fair go than the liberals.

Under the liberals there will be an attack on your working conditions, more casualization and outsourcing of your work.

And thousands of cheap overseas visa workers flooding in and pushing down pay rates under the free trade agreement they signed.

Mark my words, genuine working people can’t afford to risk a Turnbull government. PLEASE PUT THE LIBERALS LAST!
