A Truck Black-Box Might Save Your Licence

Ashleigh Hall

BGC driver says his little device has proved very handy indeed

BGC truckie Ashleigh Hall has fitted an Auto Black Box to the front of his truck and highly recommends them to follow road users.

You'll pay between $190 and $400 for one of the cameras but Ashley says his has already saved him more than that.

As anyone who drives an articulated vehicle around town knows, turning through a set of traffic lights on time in heavy traffic can be fraught with danger.

Although the lights might have been green at first they can turn red before you complete the manoeuvre.

And with the government revenue raisers at more and more intersections the job isn't getting any easier.

Four demerit points and several hundred dollars out of pocket and there's not much you can do about it. Unless you have a Black Box Recorder.

That's exactly what happened to Ashleigh who took his film into the traffic cops in Wellington Street Perth and showed them what had happened.

His traffic infringement was cancelled and he retains his clean driving record.

Ashleigh says the cameras can also prove handy if your truck is involved in an accident.

"Six or eight times a day I have a motorist pull out or cut in front of me and have to hit the brakes in a hurry. It happens to all truckies and its only a matter of time before you crash into them.

But at least the Black Box cameras show who is at fault. If you run into the back of someone you are generally accused of being at fault. The camera can correct that assertion.

"I take mine home each day and download it onto my computer. It really is amazing to watch the crazy things people do on the roads".

The Black Box cameras are simply fitted to the inside of the windscreen. Ashleigh takes his out of the truck at the end of the working day and pops it back in the next morning.

he bought his from Auto Black Box who say their units provide;

  • Automatic and continuous video and audio recording in all situations.
  • Clear identification of cause and consequences in a car accident.
  • Protective measures against reckless drivers
  • Surveillance comfort for your mind when you are away from your vehicle
  • Prevention of unethical situations such as a hit & run and theft
